Standard Test Methods for Notched Bar Impact Testing of Metallic Materials
This standard defines the test procedure, minimum requirements of the impact pendulum, instructions about the type of specimen (geometry and preparation), as well as the results that you want to obtain from the impact test. Both the Charpy test and the IZOD test are described.
The purpose of this test is to study the behavior of a metal against the application of a point load that causes a multiaxial stress related to the notch and variable depending on the temperature of the material. It has been shown that in many cases the results of the impact test can be associated with the behavior of the material, especially with the ductile-brittle transition.
