  • Fracture Mechanics Testing

    STANDARDS ISO 12135, ASTM E399, BS 7448, ASTM E1820

Over the past few years, research into fracture mechanics of materials such as crack propagation and fracture toughness has become particularly relevant in metallic materials such as polymers or composite materials.

IBERTEST offers a complete high-tech solution that covers all phases of the process, using dynamic testing machines that allow the creation of an initial crack or crack for material fatigue (pre-cracking) by applying load cycles on standardized specimens, equipped with a notch. To perform a static test and determine the fracture toughness of the material by KIC or CTOD method.

    “Pre-cracking”, generation of the pre-cracking

    pre-cracking fracture mechanics

The system allows a controlled size crack to be made in the specimen before the static test to determine fracture toughness. The complete test is divided into 3 phases:

    • – Phase 1: Generation of the crack.
    • – Phase 2: Observation of crack growth.
    • – Phase 3: Approximation to the required crack length.

    Crack measurement method

To determine crack growth during pre-cracking, it can be measured by means of an extensometer, placed on the edges of the specimen notch, which would be the direct measurement of the COD (Crack Opening Displacement).
Optionally, this measurement can be carried out by an electrical potential system.
