Bacon device is used for sampling bituminous binding materials, at different heights inside a tank or reservoir, according to the standard practice, as described in NLT-121, UNE 83 109, ASTM D 140 and equivalent.
It consists of a bronze cylinder with threaded lid and bottom, and a conical rod closing the inside piston against the bottom, so as to suction the sample under the effect of a device keeping the rod pressed and the cylinder closed. A clevis or upper washer let tie a cable or rope to the top, when it is required to take a sample from deep parts of tanks/reservoirs.

Saybolt furol is aimed at petroleum products. Within conditions described in NLT-133, ASTM D 88 and equivalent, Saybolt viscosity is given by the time taken by 60 ml of sample to flow through a calibrated hole.

IB60-025E - Dean & Stark, Water Content Measurer

Mainly to measure the water content, and any fluid saturation in emulsified asphalts from core samples, by distillation extraction, as per NLT-137 and ASTM D 244. First water and then solvent are vaporized, then condensed and collected in a calibrated trap, so their volumes are measured. The solvent flows back over the sample and extracts the oil over a process lasting several days. The oil volume is calculated from the sample weight loss. Saturations are calculated from the volumes.
